Narragansett Number One Foundation Awards $7,000 Grant [Literacy Volunteers of Greater Sanford]

(Sanford, ME – September 6, 2011) – Literacy Volunteers of Greater Sanford (LVGS) today announced that it has been awarded a one-year grant totaling $7,000 by the Narragansett Number One Foundation of Buxton, Maine.  This investment will support a literacy project with the York County Shelter Programs in Alfred.

The grant will provide funds for LVGS to reach out to adult residents of the York County Shelter Programs who may have literacy needs to assist them with short-term and long-term goals, including obtaining important documents, assessing literacy levels, creating resumes, and improving literacy skills.  The goal is to provide opportunities for individuals to build self-esteem and become more independent community members.  Emphasis will be on services for residents of the Emergency Shelter in Alfred.

The mission of LVGS is supporting the literacy needs of adults with free, confidential one-on-one tutoring and small group instruction by trained adult volunteers.  Founded in 1986, LVGS is celebrating a quarter-century of helping adults improve their literacy levels and change their lives.  Whether the goal is to fill out a job application, understand a label on a prescription bottle or read a bedtime story to a child, LVGS offers opportunities for adult learners to improve their literacy skills and achieve their goals relating to family, career, and participation in civic affairs.
