Archive: March 2012

Participants (L-R): Roberta Taylor, Jodi Carter, Mary Tyler, Charleen Chase, Lise McLain, Judy Whitman, Rosemary McLean. Instructor (seated): Jean M. Waite, Director of Adult and Continuing Education
This course centers around life in Upton, Maine during the Civil War (1860-65) and the impact it had on the families especially the women who were left behind. The students are reading through the diary of Lydia Richards, who was left to run the family farm and care for three small children, when her husband, Stephen, went to war. She kept a detailed diary of her life during the time that he was away. Most of the families were related in some way and kept in touch with each other and helped out.
This course was offered through MSAD#44 Adult and Continuing Education and Western Mountains Senior College.

You Can Can [MSAD#44 Continuing Education]

Lauren Gailitis and Eileen Meisner in Eileen's kitchen
Instructor Eileen Meisner met with students at her home and gave an introductory class on canning. With a few simple instructions and a demonstration, students left with ideas on how to can their vegetables from their gardens this fall. It is always handy to have a supply of home grown veggies that you have preserved and placed on the shelf for use during the winter months or to give as gifts to your friends and neighbors. Keep an eye out for the next "You Can Can" course and be ready to join Eileen and preserve all those extra garden veggies.
