It has been another successful year in our Adult Education program! Thank you for making our adult education program one of the most successful in the State of Maine! Well over 2,000 people take part in it each year. Keep in mind that we are constantly looking for new ideas and new teachers and are continually striving to make this a diverse and inviting program. We need your help to make this a truly “community” education program. Let us know what you would like to see us offer, or what you could teach or any other ideas you think would help make this a program that serves this community better. Thanks to all who have participated over this past year!

MACEA meeting 5-18-2012
Present: Tom Reuwer, Sue Sutter, Adam Mitchell, Helen Marston, Adrien Deschenes, Bob O’Brien, Gary Upham, John Hoeprich, Dean Darien.
Check-ins
Agenda: Discussion of MACEA future with MAEA…
- Meeting the needs of facilities and how students have different needs within facilities.
- Dedicating some percentage of Adult Ed. funding to corrections education.
- Creating more universality in programs/resources between facilities and, ultimately, to Adult Ed. programs when inmates are released.
- Thus making more impact on reducing recidivism and easement of continuation when released.
- Support of professional development for corrections educators and volunteers.
All present were in agreement that we should move forward on altering the membership of MACEA. Gary is interested in being a liaison between facilities, focusing on education. This is pending approval by DOC commissioner. Sue will contact Ellis King about a survey of education programs in facilities that was conducted 4-5 years ago as a possible baseline.
Next meeting: July 21, 2012 @ Two Bridges Regional Jail

It's April 13, 2012 and Sros Brewer is being sworn in as a U.S. Citizen; a day she had been waiting for since she came from Cambodia sixteen years ago.
A few months after her arrival, she enrolled in our ESOL class. One day, dressed rather chic, she asked if she could leave class early as she had to go to city hall. When asked why, she said, "me marry today".
During these years of life's hills and valleys, she has maintained a wonderful attitude. Even today, she finds time to attend class after returning from her second shift job.
Sros is a proud parent of two children both of whom are attending college. Her son will graduate from University of Maine, Orono next year and her daughter is presently attending College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, MA.
The staff and students are immensely proud of our new citizen.
CONGRATULATIONS Sros!!
