Learn Healthy Eating Tips with Adult Ed

Looking for new and easy ways to improve your health and that of your family? Two one-night workshops will help you with lots of great tips on improving health simply by changing what and how you eat. Cooking Dinner - Quick, Easy, & Healthy, on March 24 at 5:30 p.m., is a cooking class taught by Courtney Lanphere, holistic health and nutrition counselor. This class is designed for busy parents who want to prepare a healthy meal for their families but also need them to be quick and easy. It would also be a good class for any busy working person who often has little time to prepare meals at home. Come learn some tips for cooking once and eating twice and take home some great recipes to try. Successful Meal Planning, taught by Dr. Eric Betz, an Applied Kinesiology Chiropractor, is about caring about what you eat. In this March 30, 6 p.m., class, he will discuss topics such as what and when to eat, how digestion figures in your overall health, and ways you can set goals for good health with how you eat.

Spring Gardening with Adult Ed!

It may be too early to plant your garden, but it's not too early to plan it. We have several great garden classes in April and May to inspire you. Now is the time to prune your trees and with the class Pruning Fruit Trees on March 27, held right at Hope Orchards, you will learn from an expert. Vegetable Gardening from the Ground Up on March 30 and Starting a Vegetable and Herb Garden will give you great tips to use now before you put plants or seeds in. For those who think they lack the space for a vegetable or herb garden, Making the Most of Small Spaces, on April 12, will help you garden even when you thought you couldn't. Learn all about organic gardening in our annual MOFGA class, Grow Your Own Organic Garden, on April 1. Great growing with adult ed is here!

Wayne Krauth, a Standish resident, recently converted a conventional gasoline vehicle to total electric. He now spends $4 per week to commute 35 miles per day. Now, the best news: Wayne would like to share his experience with you next fall through the Bonny Eagle Adult Education program.

The course will start with a one-night Overview as a teaser. It will be followed by a 4-6 week Design and Construction Theory for Building an Electric Car. You will be able to register for just the overview, or the full session. Two College Transition Classes Added at Gorham Adult Education

College Ready Algebra

This class is equivalent to Math 050 at SMCC. Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to pass the math Accuplacer and place in College Algebra.

When: April 6, 2010

What Time: 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Where: Gorham Middle School

The class is 12 weeks and is scheduled to end on June 22, 2010. Steve McFarland is the instructor. There is no cost to the student for this program except for a refundable book deposit of $20.

College Ready

This class covers the skills and knowledge that will help to make your transition to college smoother and reduce your anxiety about tackling this new venture.

Module 1 Building Your Career

Mondays: April 26, May 3, and May 10

Module 2 Study Skills

Mondays: May 17, May 24 and June 7

Module 3 The College Experience

June 14, June 21 and June 28

Classes will meet from 9:00 am until 2:00 pm at Gorham Middle School. It is recommended that students take all three modules but students can be accepted into individual modules. There is no cost to the student for this program.

The class will be taught by Arlene Jacques, Counselor for the CORE Transition Program.

College Instructors Needed for Fall 2010

The MSAD#3 Adult Education Program is seeking 2 college instructors for the Fall 2010 semester. One instructor will teach MAT 117, College Algebra and the other will teach ENG 101, English Comp. These will be college level classes with college credit given to students who pass. The curriculum will be given to the instructor by Kennebec Valley Community College (KVCC).

The applicant must have a Mster's Degree in subject-specific area (either Math or English) or a Bachelor's Degree in the area they are teaching and a Master's Degree in Education or at least 18 credits in their subject field.

The pay is 1814.00 for the 3 credit class.

Position will begin week of Sept. 7, 2010.

Lewiston Adult Education is seeking a dynamic individual to provide customer service and receptionist duties, general office support, and data processing for evening programming located at Lewiston High School.

This is a part-time evening position, approximately 12 hours per week, with a varying schedule running from mid-January through mid-June and the end of August through mid-December.

Qualified candidates will have strong interpersonal skills, solid telephone and reception skills, proficiency with word processing, database management and email, a high school diploma or GED, and a minimum of three years of prior clerical experience.

Compensation depends upon experience.

Be Inspired at the 2010 CraftBoston Fair!

Lewiston Adult Education will be hosting a day trip to the Society of Arts and Crafts' spectacular CraftBoston fair on Saturday, April 10th. Be inspired as you enjoy Boston and discover New England’s premier artisan basketweavers, fiber artists, glass blowers, jewelers, metalsmiths, potters, sculptors, and more- without the hassle of driving and parking in the city!

CraftBoston features over 200 craft artists who represent the finest in their respective fields. View exquisite works of art and enjoy the opportunity to meet and talk with the artists themselves. Participants will take guided tour of the fair at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston, and then have the opportunity to enjoy the fair at their leisure, or explore Boston on their own.

The Seaport World Trade Center is just one mile from Quincy Market, which features a delightful variety of shops and restaurants.

Tour participants will meet at the Lewiston Park and Ride at 7:00 am on April 10th to board the coach, and arrive at the fair in time for a 10:30 am private tour. For those interested in exploring Quincy Market, the coach will make a trip from CraftBoston to Quincy Market at 12:30. The coach will make the final pick-up for the ride home at the CraftBoston at 4:45, and at Quincy Market at 5:00.

The $70 fee for the trip includes transportation from Lewiston to Boston and between the fair and Quincy Market, admission to the fair, and a guided tour of CraftBoston highlights. Please note: registration fees for this trip are not refundable after March 25th.

PVAEC Holds CNA Orientation

PVAEC's next CNA class will start Monday, March 29, 2010. On Tuesday, March 2, 2010 PVAEC held the CNA Orientation. All those interested in taking a CNA class attended this orientation to take the assessment test and complete the enrollment paperwork. 10 students were chosen for the March 29th class.
